What happens to the people that never got a chance to hear about Christ? Where do they go when they die?

The premise of your question is incorrect according to the scriptures. There no one who have not heard the word of God although they may not have heard of Jesus.

As God, Jesus gives two candles to everyone born into the world. The candle of creation and the candle of conscience which God has written His moral laws. Let’s look at what the scriptures state:

John 1:9

That was the true Light WHICH GIVES LIGHT TO EVERY MAN COMING INTO THE WORLD.

The scriptures state that if they follow that knowledge of God given to them, it will lead them to Christ.

Psalms 19:1-4

The heavens declare the glory of God;And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge.

There is no speech nor language

Where their voice is not heard.

Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun,

What happens when people rejects that light and knowledge because of their own learning and love of their sins.

Romans 1:18-21

God's Wrath on Unrighteousness

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, WHO SUPPRESS THE TRUTH IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS, because what may be known of God IS MANIFEST IN THEM, FOR GOD HAS SHOWN IT TO THEM. This is what happens to people who have never heard the gospel and are never saved by God. Yet others believe in the one true God based upon the revelation of creation then God. See Cornelius and the Ethiopian eunuch among others in the book of Acts.

Now for the laws of God written on everyone’s heart. This is how even the most antagonistic non-religious person knows that it is wrong to steal, kill, rape, lie, etc. No one has to instruct us not to do these things and most don’t do them simply because there is governmental laws against them. Most would call it instinct however God states that He placed it there to keep us from killing each other. This is one way He restrains evil but that’s another topic. Back to the conscience, the scriptures states this:

Romans 2:11-16

For there is no partiality with God.

For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

What happens to most people is that they blow out both candles and never come to the knowledge of the truth hence never hearing the gospel. People deny that God created everything then this happens:

Romans 1:22-25

Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

You get an immoral sexual revolution of all kinds. Fornication, adultery, homosexuality, beastiality, etc.

Then people overrun their conscience and this happens: Titus 1:15-16

To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled. They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.

Anyone that dies in this life without being "born again" which simply means God creates a new human spirit within your current body, will be judged and casted into the lake of fire.

13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:13-15
